Chickens are an important player in the development and growth of the farm. As with all of our animal enterprises, our birds have access to fresh grass every day. They forage for some of their daily feed, but we supplement with a Non-GMO, soy-free feed as needed.
The chickens do what chickens do... They scratch and till and manure the land. By moving them to fresh pasture every day we are able to manage the fertility and health of the pasture. As the years progress we are seeing a marked inprovement in soil fertility.
The increased fertility results in a positive cascade of events. As the pasture health regenerates, we can support more animals. As we increase animal density, we increase the rate at which our soil health improves. It truly is a positive partnership between the land and the animals.
